New data from BrightEdge shows that ChatGPT referral traffic increased 101% from January through August 2026, strengthening its position as the leading source of AI-generated referral traffic to brands.
During the same period, ChatGPT’s share of AI referral traffic climbed to a 2026 high of 95.1%. The increase indicates that ChatGPT is not only maintaining a significant share of AI-driven discovery but is also sending substantially more users to websites.
The growth accelerated in August, when ChatGPT referral traffic increased 36% compared with July, marking its largest one-month increase of the year.
Other major AI platforms experienced different trends during the same month. Gemini grew 1%, while Claude declined 15% and Perplexity declined 17%.
The data highlights changing patterns in how users move between AI platforms and how those platforms contribute to website discovery.
BrightEdge data shows that ChatGPT’s share of AI referral traffic reached a 2026 low of 89.5% in April before steadily increasing over the following months.
By August, ChatGPT had reached 95.1% of AI referral traffic. Gemini accounted for 2.4%, Perplexity for 1.1%, and Claude for 0.8%.
Together, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude represented 4.3% of AI referral traffic, meaning ChatGPT generated roughly 22 times their combined share during August.
Although AI platforms still account for a relatively small portion of overall website referral traffic compared with traditional search, their contribution is increasing.
According to BrightEdge, total referral traffic from AI platforms has grown approximately 73% in less than a year.
This growth is creating an additional discovery channel for brands as consumers increasingly use AI platforms to research products, services, companies, and other information.
Traditional search remains the primary source of website traffic, but AI platforms are becoming another important part of the online discovery journey.
Users can begin their research within platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, where AI-generated answers may influence which brands users consider and which websites they ultimately visit.
For marketers, this means visibility is increasingly extending beyond traditional search rankings. Brands also need to understand whether their content appears in AI-generated answers, citations, and recommendations that can lead users directly to their websites.
Jim Yu, CEO and co-founder of BrightEdge, said the AI market appeared more fluid earlier in the year, with users moving between platforms based on perceived capabilities.
According to Yu, the latest data shows that ChatGPT is not simply recovering its earlier share but is also sending substantially more users to the web than it did at the beginning of 2026.
The company says this makes the role of AI platforms increasingly relevant for marketers monitoring where website traffic and brand discovery originate.
As AI-generated discovery continues to develop, marketers are increasingly looking beyond conventional search engine optimization.
Brands need to evaluate how they are represented across AI platforms, which prompts and customer journeys lead to their content, and whether AI-generated responses include their websites or brand information.
This creates a broader visibility challenge that spans both traditional search and AI-powered discovery environments.
BrightEdge provides tools designed to help marketers monitor visibility across traditional and AI search.
With BrightEdge AI Catalyst, brands can track how they appear across AI engines, including ChatGPT, understand the prompts and journeys influencing discovery, and identify opportunities to optimize content.
The platform combines AI visibility insights with search data and recommendations, giving marketers a connected view of how customers discover and interact with brands across different search environments.
BrightEdge’s latest findings highlight the growing role of AI platforms in directing users toward websites and brands.
With ChatGPT referral traffic more than doubling from January to August 2026 and overall AI referral traffic continuing to grow, AI-generated discovery is becoming an increasingly relevant consideration for organizations focused on digital visibility, content strategy, and website traffic.
